Welcome

My name is Derek, and I am a grateful recovered alcoholic. Welcome to my blog.

I want to preface this whole process by saying that most of what I have to say comes out of the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous. You are free to agree or disagree with any or all of what is written here. I am not an AA guru, nor an expert on the Big Book. I am just an alcoholic who has found a better way of life through the 12 steps.

I realized during some early morning meditation that, due to living in a smaller town with somewhat limited 12th step work opportunities, I needed to get creative in my efforts to carry the message. So, I have created this blog. The primary goal of which will be to provide a place where the newcomer may come to gain a better understanding of the information presented in the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous. If all goes as planned, I will try to make regular posts on Sundays, with intermittent posts during the week. If this blog only accomplishes one thing, it is my hope that there is an alcoholic out there who will benefit from a greater understanding of the truth found in the pages of the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous. I will present the information found in the recovery portion of the book (Title page through Page 164), relating my own personal journey through the steps, my spiritual experience that resulted from following those directions, and how I carry this message to those afflicted with this fatal spiritual malady.

  1. This is awesome Derek!! Finally, an AA blog that I can relate to, funny how people believe so much of the Big Book but have a problem with "recovered"! The 'Set Aside Prayer'....oh yeah. Love this sponsorship lineage and am so grateful to have run into it a few years back.

    1. Lineage equates to multi level marketing, or pyramid schemes. The purpose of taking the steps is to free the alkie from bondage to human power. Sponsorship lineage is bent towards cultish endeavors.

    2. These prayers said before meetings hold the members who aren't allied with sects or religion hostage. There are no gurus in AA and nobody is holier than thou and the most will ever be as human so I don't like these prayers that infiltrate meetings.

  2. How much time do you have since your last drink?

  3. Don did not "invent" the set asside prayer. Joe did. Don's sponsor Bruce in Canon City suggested that Don follow the directions in We Agnostics - laying asside predjudice - Joe Hawk came up with the Set Asside Prayer...

    1. That prayer isn't part of the 12 steps of recovery.

  4. That's interesting... I had heard Joe and Mark talk a bit about it... Maybe what Joe actually said was that the inspiration for the Set Aside Prayer came from Don, and Bruce, and probably further up with Gary, Paul, Earl, and Bob (I think that lineage is accurate). I actually meant to ask Mark about that, and of course, he passed... so I never got the chance.

Joanna, you wouldn't happen to be Jo N., that works at Denver Intergroup, would you?

Next time I'm in Denver, and awake early enough (is it Friday?), I'll try to come by and check out "An AA Group". Last time I was in town, I think I got there the day after your group met, and left the day before your next meeting. I did manage to check out the Four Horsemen meeting at York Street, which was a pretty decent meeting.

  5. The Set-Aside prayer came from Los Angeles. Chuck C. (who is now deceased.)

  6. The set a side prayer / The Lay a side prayer came from Joe H, he told me he was inspired to come up with that prayer from his sponser Don P. Joe told me that in 2004

    1. Who cares. We aren't allied with any sect, denomination, religion, organization, etc. I don't care for these prayers.
